Stand on One Foot

It’s that slippery time of year, when each time we leave the house we risk slipping on the ice and having a fall.   We may not have as much snow or the subzero temps like last year, however it’s still icy out there!

One thing you can do everyday to help your balance is simply stand on one foot.   You can stand on one foot at a time while brushing your teeth each morning to make it a part of your routine.  Consistently working on your balance is going to help you tremendously as you navigate the slick sidewalks, parking lots, and driveways.

A great one to start with is Vrksasana or Tree Pose.  Standing on one leg and placing the opposite foot along the inner ankle, calf, or thigh of the standing leg.

Work at home or in class on strength, flexibility, and balance.  Join us anytime at the Aurora Yoga Center.   There are many classes for all levels of students each week.

Lower-Back Pain

Glad to be back on the blog! – Life has been good and extra busy with our new addition.   Herbert Jude Manning was born on September 22, 2014.  He is a super sweet and happy baby.

Low back pain is a problem for so many of us.   Jeff came across the following article today, it is from a study about pain treatment.Jeff reading

“Regarding lower-back pain, there are many possible treatments available.  In a recent study, 492 participants complaining of lower-back pain were questioned as to the methods of treatment they had tried and the efficacy of each.  The study found that among those who tried treatment by yoga instructors, 96 percent of the cases had moderate to long-term relief from symptoms, compared to 65 percent who reported the same level of relief when they were treated by physical therapists, 28 percent who were treated by chiropractors, 10 percent who were treated by massage therapists, and only 4 percent who were treated by neurologists.  The clear superiority of yoga and physical therapy in regard to lower-back pain is likely due to their emphasis on exercises that strengthen the muscles of the back and the supporting muscles of the abdomen; the more fit you are in terms of yogic conditioning, the less likely you are to suffer from lower-back pain.”  From the International Journal of Yoga Therapy 13 (2003):55

Paddle to Cure Diabetes

We are so happy to have Pete Stadalsky as one of our yoga teachers at the Aurora Yoga Center.  Besides being a great teacher, he is kind and caring and generous.  Next week Pete and his good friend Nolan embark on a 1000 mile canoe trip in an effort to raise $10,000 for the American Diabetes Association.   Both paddlers have fathers with type one diabetes.

Gaits, Traits, Ills, & Thrills

Brian Lay is a good friend of Jeff & Lisa & the Aurora Yoga Center.   Brian is a wonderful massage therapist who works at the Aurora Yoga Center.   Brian also teaches Chinese Astrology classes at the AYC the 3rd Friday of each month.   The class coming up this Friday sounds very interesting – Physical Traits and Health of the Chinese Zodiac: Gaits, Traits, Ill’s, and Thrills.

Helpful Little Things That Can Help Us Grow

There are some exciting plans for improvements and growth in the works for the Aurora Yoga Center. We are expanding wellness opportunities for the community by adding more treatment rooms to the building. These rooms will be used for massage, acupuncture, and esthetician work. We are hoping to expand the space of the yoga studio and eventually add a new wood floor. Please help us get the word out to more students so that we can get these projects running and make some cosmetic updates to the space as well.

– Bring a friend or two with you to class. Word of mouth and personal recommendations are the absolute best way to grow our business.

Looking For Spring

It’s been a long, cold, snowy winter here in Aurora, IL.  Image(ice formation on the side of the studio)

I think we are all about to go a little crazy living in this arctic climate…. but, we have hope.   Hope that those bulbs under the layers of snow, ice, and soil will bloom soon.

This week, let’s just enjoy some photos of the beautiful gardens at the AYC and think of warmer weather.  Thanks to the hard work of Marianne Gerry, the center has spectacular front and side gardens.

Marianne is a yoga student at the center who volunteers her time and shares perennials form her home garden with the Aurora Yoga Center.

It’s amazing what she has created.  Everyone enjoys the colors and textures that bloom all Spring, Summer, & Fall.

The garden is starting to come to life despite the frigid temperatures.   We will soon see the crocuses poking through the stark, white snow.

This Summer, Lisa and the kids plan to add a new garden to the backyard of the studio.  This will be an organic veggie garden.   Can’t wait to dig in the dirt!  

Even though it is cold, we hope to see you at the Aurora Yoga Center soon!
